No one likes to be lied to. Without truth there can be no trust.
But what is truth? Does it really exist? Well, think about it for a moment. It’s actually impossible to say “truth does not exist” without at the same time making a truth claim! Try to deny that truth exists, and you’ll only end up proving it does.
But how do you determine if some particular thing is true? Is something true if it feels true? No. If I feel 20, but I’m actually 50, my feelings don’t alter the facts. Something is true when it corresponds to reality, because truth is ‘the way things are’, the way God made them. Empiricism, rationalism, pragmatism and relativism all fall short as determiners of truth, because without God there is no ultimate and objective reference point. Without God, all we have is a multitude of conflicting opinions, combined with the real possibility that we could all be wrong about everything we’ve ever known. Ever heard of ‘the Matrix’?
Introduce God, and everything changes. God is an infinite, intelligent, personal, and morally perfect being. He doesn’t create truth: He is truth. All truth is from God; all truth is God’s truth, and there is no truth without God. We human beings do not determine truth, we merely discover it: and it is in His Word, the Bible, that God has revealed His truth to us. Jesus said, “Your Word is truth” (Bible, John 17:17).
One more thing. Truth, by its nature, is exclusive; which means that everything opposed to truth is false. Something cannot be both true and false in the same sense, at the same time. That’s why something cannot be ‘true for you but not true for me’, nor can there be such a thing as ‘your truth’ and ‘my truth’. There’s just truth.
But if there’s a personal, morally perfect God, why is there evil in the world? Apart from the fact that without God nothing can truly be defined as evil, it must be understood that humanity is responsible for the mess the world is in, not God. We have ruined God’s perfect world through our sin. At the beginning of history, in defiance of God, humanity decided to reject the authority of God and determine ‘its own truth’. Human nature has been flawed ever since, a fact confirmed globally and daily in sinful human thoughts, words and actions. Though we may like to think of ourselves as better than others, the truth is, “There is no difference [between any of us], for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Rom 3:23). To die with those sins unforgiven will mean to be judged by God and condemned to hell.
What can you do about it? Nothing. The Bible is clear: no one can merit favour with God. Your prayers, baptism, church attendance and charitable giving cannot clear your guilt and make you right with God. The answer to your problem is not sincerely performed “works of righteousness” (Titus 3:5). What you need is a Saviour, and Jesus said “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no one comes to the Father, except through me” (John 14:6). He bore God’s punishment for sin when He suffered and died on the cross. Three days later God raised Him from the dead, demonstrating that the work to save sinners was and is complete. Romans 5:8 says “But God demonstrates his own love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Why not take God at His word? Trust in Christ now for salvation and you will be saved. “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32).
